Valve Material Selection Guide: Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel for Industrial Working Conditions

Intro Material is the core factor deciding valve service life. Wrong material choice causes leakage, corrosion and unexpected shutdown. Carbon steel and stainless steel are the most popular body materials for industrial valves.

Carbon Steel Valve (WCB / A105)

✅ Advantages

  • High mechanical strength, good performance under high temperature and high pressure
  • Lower cost compared with stainless steel
  • Good weldability for custom machining ⚠️ Limitations
  • Poor anti-corrosion performance, easy to rust in humid or acid medium 📌 Suitable: Oil, steam, non-corrosive water, natural gas pipelines

Stainless Steel Valve (304 / 316L)

✅ Advantages

  • Excellent corrosion resistance against weak acid, alkali and seawater
  • Stable performance under low temperature
  • Clean surface, suitable for sanitary and chemical medium ⚠️ Limitations
  • Higher price, lower strength at ultra-high temperature 📌 Suitable: Chemical, pharmaceutical, seawater, wastewater treatment

Quick Selection Checklist

  1. Confirm medium: Corrosive medium → 316L stainless steel
  2. Working temperature above 425℃ → Carbon steel
  3. Budget limited, non-corrosive medium → WCB carbon steel
  4. Marine / salt fog environment → 316L
